Abstract

ABSTRACTED FROM THE OPENING PARAGRAPHS: This chapter examines three dimensions of inequality in access to land: inequality in access to land use, land output, and decision-making about land. By questioning the relationships between various parties, including among villagers, between villagers and local cadres, between village and commune institutions, and between villagers and the state at large, the chapter investigates in what ways and to what extent the current land tenure regime and the modernization and industrialization programmes have created inequality in access to land. Secondly, the chapter analyses the reactions of a number of villagers to the increasing inequality in land access in the villages of the northern delta.
