Abstract

Since early 1985 the School of Surveying at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, has been involved in the Thailand Land Titling Project. This project is jointly funded by the World Bank, The Royal Thai Government and the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau. This paper presents an overview of the project along with the role of surveying and mapping in less developed countries. The major objectives of the project are presented. The project designers have identified education and training as the key initiatives of the project. Surveying education will enable the bulk of this project to be carried out using Thai personnel. Some of the costs and benefits to the School of Surveying, by being involved in this project, are presented. Implications for the surveying and mapping community are also drawn.
