Abstract

This paper proposes a framework for examining, locally, the problem of tropical deforestation and subsequent use of forest land. Through a case study of Thailand, the situation of forests, forest reserve, and forest land is examined. Problems and successes of rehabilitation of forest land are detailed. This provides a background against which to consider the problem of use and tenure of cleared land in terms of the political economy of resource use. Access to and control over local resources depends on the outcome of a complex set of relationships between local and non-local actors, including representatives of the state and diverse class interests.
